Sunday, June 3, 2018 will see our 14th annual Grand Siècle Day at the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte.
A day spent costumed in the fashions of the 17th century, a celebration where Baroque dancing blends with musketeers displaying their skill and carriage rides in the park, in a unique experience of the fine art of living in the France of Louis XIV and Nicolas Fouquet!
A Costume Day to celebrate the Grand Siècle
Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte—a family home but also famous for festivities in Nicolas Fouquet’s time—invites you to go back in time for a whole day of life as it was under the Sun King!
Each year, thousands of costumed visitors and curious spectators crowd the gates of the château, the former dressed in their best finery—often elaborated by their own hands over the preceding year—to spend a day at court in 17th century France.
The Most Beautiful “Déjeuner sur l’Herbe” Prize will provide the crowning touch to the day, rewarding the most sumptuously, extravagantly, poetically, splendidly concocted compositions in the gardens à la française created by Le Nôtre.
- A contest of tableaux vivants!
Giant picture frames will be set up in various spots scattered over the garden and the château; groups of costumed visitors will be able to gather with their friends to create compositions inspired by the theme given on the back of each frame: Romanticism, Life at Court, Banquets, Music, Painting… Each tableau vivant will be immortalized by our official photographer, and a contest organized on our official Facebook page (@ChateauVLV) to award the best composition in each category!
In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the estate to the public (March 30th 1968), the château has decided to democratize the election for the best costumes! Each visitor will be given a ticket for each category, to be cast for the person whose costume they found most impressive. Best costume prizes will be awarded in 4 categories: Man/Woman/ Child/ Fantasy.
The traditional Parade of Elegance, commented by Calixte de Nigremont will take place at 4:30 p.m. along the main walkway in the jardin à la française, and will bring together all of those in costume who gathered more than 15 tickets!
Events for all
Spectacles and demonstrations of skill by musketeers will punctuate this exceptional day, while displays of Baroque dancing will lend gaiety to the proceedings. The adventure will continue with carriage rides in the garden (additional charge) and the possibility for visitors to be made up in 17th century fashion by make-up artists (no additional charge).
A special moment of sharing and good humor spent with family or friends, in the idyllic setting of the Palace that inspired the Château de Versailles !
